When to use it
Use this design when you need to understand a phenomenon in depth across several real-world contexts simultaneously and believe that visual data will unlock dimensions of experience not easily expressed in words. It is well suited to topics involving space, identity, emotion, material culture, or embodied practice — areas where images carry meaning that language alone cannot convey. Suitable sample sizes range from 3 to 10 cases (following Yin's guidance), with multiple participants per case. Do not use it when the research question calls for statistical generalisation, when visual data collection is ethically inappropriate (e.g., sensitive clinical settings without robust consent infrastructure), or when a single in-depth case would suffice to answer the question.

Photovoice is a specific participatory action research methodology in which community members photograph their own lives to advocate for social change, typically within a single community. The goal is analytic insight across contexts rather than community empowerment per se, though the approaches share the photo-elicitation technique.
How many cases do I need?
Yin recommends a minimum of two cases to support replication logic, with three to ten cases being common in practice. The number should be driven by the replication strategy: literal replication (expect similar results) typically requires fewer cases; theoretical replication (expect different results for specifiable reasons) benefits from more cases with deliberate variation.
Do participants have to take their own photographs?
No. Images can be researcher-generated, participant-generated, or drawn from existing archives. The choice depends on the research question. Participant-generated images are preferred when you want to understand participants' own perspectives and priorities; researcher-generated images are useful when systematic documentation of sites is the goal; existing images can be used when the topic involves historical or publicly available visual material.
How do I handle image anonymisation for publication?
Plan anonymisation before data collection. Common strategies include pixelating or blurring faces and identifying features, obtaining explicit publication consent from all identifiable individuals, using pseudonyms for locations, and restricting access to original images. Ethics board guidance specific to visual data should be sought early, as standard text-data protocols do not cover the additional risks of photographic material.
Can I use qualitative software for analysis?
Yes. Software such as NVivo, ATLAS.ti, or Dedoose supports management and coding of both image and transcript data within and across cases. These tools assist organisation and retrieval but do not replace the researcher's interpretive work of thematic analysis, cross-case comparison, and synthesis.
