Digital Classic Grounded Theory

Digital Classic Grounded Theory applies Glaser and Strauss's original (Glaserian) grounded theory methodology to data collected from online and digital environments — including social media, online forums, email threads, and chat logs. It preserves the inductive, emergence-focused logic of classic GT while adapting sampling, data collection, and ethical practices to the digital context, aiming to generate a grounded substantive theory that explains a social or psychological process as it unfolds online.

When to use it

Use Digital Classic Grounded Theory when your research question asks how a social or psychological process unfolds within a digital community or online platform, and when you want a theory to emerge from the data rather than test a prior hypothesis. It is well-suited to online health communities, social movements on social media, professional networks, gaming communities, and similar digitally-native social worlds where large volumes of naturally occurring text are available. Avoid it when: (1) your study needs to be confirmatory or hypothesis-testing — use quantitative methods instead; (2) your research question is descriptive rather than process-oriented — thematic analysis or content analysis may be more appropriate; (3) you need rich contextual interpretation of meaning rather than theory generation — hermeneutic or constructivist approaches may fit better; (4) the digital data are too thin or fragmented to support saturation.

  • Produces a substantive theory grounded in real online behaviour rather than imported from prior literature.
  • Leverages naturally occurring digital data that are often large in volume, non-reactive, and archivable.
  • The classic (Glaserian) tradition's strict emergence discipline reduces the risk of researcher-imposed frameworks.
  • Applicable across disciplines — sociology, health communication, information science, education, and organisational studies.
  • Theoretical sampling in digital environments is practically efficient: researchers can search and retrieve specific types of content rapidly.
Limitations
  • Digital data are context-stripped: text lacks tone, gesture, and embodied meaning, which limits understanding of deeper intent.
  • Theoretical saturation may be difficult to identify in digital fields with millions of posts — the researcher must make principled decisions about when to stop.
  • Classic GT's inductive purity requires disciplined resistance to existing theory; researchers trained in other paradigms often struggle to suspend their conceptual frameworks.
  • Ethical challenges are substantial: consent, anonymity, and the public/private boundary of digital data are contested and context-dependent.
  • The resulting theory describes online social processes and may not transfer to offline contexts.

What makes Digital Classic GT different from Digital Constructivist or Digital Straussian GT?

Classic GT (Glaserian) demands strict inductive emergence and discourages literature engagement until the core category is identified; it operates from a realist epistemology. Straussian GT (Strauss and Corbin) introduces more structured coding procedures (open, axial, selective) and is more tolerant of prior concepts. Constructivist GT (Charmaz) foregrounds the researcher's role in constructing categories and adopts a relativist or interpretivist stance. In the digital context, all three can handle online data, but the analytic logic and epistemological commitments differ significantly.

Can I use social media data that were posted publicly without obtaining consent?

This is genuinely contested. Many ethical frameworks distinguish between data posted in clearly public spaces (e.g., public Twitter/X accounts) and data posted in semi-public or community spaces (e.g., support groups that are technically public but normatively private). The Association of Internet Researchers (AoIR) ethics guidelines recommend case-by-case assessment based on context, sensitivity of topic, and the reasonable expectations of community members. Always consult your institution's ethics board.

How do I know when I have reached theoretical saturation in a digital field?

Saturation is reached when additional theoretical sampling — deliberately seeking new digital contexts, time periods, or participant types to test and elaborate your categories — no longer generates new conceptual properties or variations. It is a conceptual judgment, not a count of posts. Thorough memoisation is essential for recognising saturation, because it lets you track what each new incident added to the developing theory.

Do I need to triangulate digital data with interviews or observation?

Classic GT does not require triangulation as a validation strategy — it validates through the theoretical logic of the emerging theory itself. However, for phenomena where naturally occurring digital text is thin or ambiguous, supplementing with online interviews or observational fieldwork (lurking, shadowing) can enrich the data. The decision should be driven by the requirements of theoretical sampling, not by a default assumption that mixed data are always better.

Is it acceptable to use NVivo or other software?

Yes, but with caution. Software can manage and organise large volumes of digital text and support coding. However, the intellectual work — inducing concepts, writing memos, identifying the core category — cannot be automated. Glaser himself expressed scepticism about software, fearing it encourages mechanical coding at the expense of theoretical thinking. Use it as a filing and retrieval tool, not as an analytic engine.
