Trustworthiness Criteria in Qualitative Research

Lincoln and Guba's Framework for Assessing Qualitative Research Rigor · Also known as: trustworthiness criteria, credibility, dependability, confirmability, transferability, qualitative quality

Trustworthiness is a framework for evaluating the quality and rigor of qualitative research, developed by Lincoln and Guba (1985) as an alternative to quantitative criteria (internal validity, external validity, reliability, objectivity). The framework comprises five criteria: credibility (findings are accurate and grounded in data), transferability (findings apply to other contexts), dependability (findings are consistent and defensible), confirmability (findings reflect the data and participants' perspectives, not researcher bias), and authenticity (research reflects diverse viewpoints and promotes understanding). This framework has become standard for assessing qualitative research across disciplines and guides researchers in designing and reporting rigorous qualitative studies.

When to use it

Trustworthiness criteria should guide the design and evaluation of all qualitative research, across disciplines and research questions. Different criteria may be emphasized depending on research goals: exploratory research emphasizes credibility and dependability; comparative research emphasizes transferability; participatory research emphasizes authenticity. When reporting qualitative findings, explicitly address how trustworthiness was achieved; this demonstrates rigor and allows readers to evaluate findings. Trustworthiness criteria are less relevant for pure theoretical work or literature reviews (which have their own quality standards) but are essential for empirical qualitative research.

  • Widely recognized across disciplines; using these criteria makes qualitative research recognizable as rigorous within academic communities.
Limitations
  • Framework can be reductive: trustworthiness is more complex and contextual than five criteria suggest; not all criteria apply equally to all studies.
  • Some qualitative paradigms (constructivist, critical realist) reject assumptions underlying the framework; alternative quality frameworks exist.
  • Criteria are often used mechanistically (checklist approach): 'I did member checking and reflexivity, therefore my research is trustworthy,' without genuine attention to quality.
  • Transferability is sometimes confused with external validity or generalizability; qualitative findings are context-specific, not population-representative.
  • Confirmability assumes researcher objectivity is possible; more recent work acknowledges that researcher influence is inevitable and cannot be fully eliminated through procedures.

How do I address all five trustworthiness criteria in my study?

You don't need to address all criteria equally; prioritize based on your research question and design. All studies should address credibility (grounding findings in data) and dependability (transparent methods). Transferability matters more for exploratory studies that may inform other contexts. Confirmability matters more when researcher bias is a concern. Authenticity matters more in participatory or advocacy research. Explicitly state which criteria are most relevant to your study and how you addressed them.

Is member checking essential for trustworthiness?

Member checking is important but not essential if other credibility strategies are robust. Triangulation (multiple data sources), prolonged engagement, and persistent observation can establish credibility without member checking. However, member checking is efficient and valued. If feasible, include it; if not, compensate with other strategies and explain why member checking was not possible.

Does transferability mean my findings should apply to other populations?

No. Transferability is context-specific: findings apply when circumstances, conditions, and participants are similar. Transferability is achieved through rich description (thick description of context) so readers can assess whether findings fit their own settings. It is not generalization (population-representative claims) but rather informed judgment about applicability in similar contexts.

Can my research have high trustworthiness if I analyzed data alone?

Yes, but additional safeguards are needed. Single-analyst research can have high trustworthiness if you use triangulation (multiple data sources, methods), reflexivity (examining your influence), negative case analysis (seeking disconfirming evidence), audit trails (documenting decisions), and member checking. Peer debriefing (discussing analysis with a colleague) strengthens trustworthiness without requiring a co-analyst.

What if my findings contradict participants' stated views?

This is analytically important and trustworthy if grounded in data. You might have interpreted what participants do differently from what they say, or identified patterns they did not consciously recognize. Address the discrepancy in interpretation: discuss why interpretations differ, whether data support your reading, and what this reveals about the phenomenon. Transparency about discrepancies strengthens trustworthiness.
