Repertory Grid Technique
Also known as: Rep Grid, Repertory Grid Test, Kelly Grid
The Repertory Grid is a qualitative-quantitative method derived from Personal Construct Theory that elicits how individuals construe (interpret and evaluate) a domain of interest—people, concepts, events, or objects—through their own idiosyncratic dimensions or 'constructs.' Introduced by George Kelly in 1955, the method generates a grid of elements (e.g., people) rated along personally meaningful bipolar constructs, revealing cognitive structures, values, and reasoning patterns without imposing researcher-defined categories.

When to use it
Use repertory grids when exploring how individuals or groups think about complex domains, especially when their personal perspective is valuable and standardized measures are inadequate. It is particularly useful in clinical assessment (understanding how clients view themselves and others), organizational research (how employees construe organizational culture or leadership), educational research (how experts vs. novices think about a subject), and consumer research (how people evaluate product attributes).

- Hybrid method: qualitative depth (personal constructs) combined with quantitative structure (grid analysis); allows systematic comparison

What is the difference between an element and a construct?
Elements are the 'objects of thought'—the things being evaluated (people, concepts, products, events). Constructs are the dimensions along which elements are evaluated. For example, if your elements are 'my parents, my siblings, my friends,' a construct might be 'emotionally supportive vs. emotionally distant,' describing how you differentiate the elements.
How do I handle constructs that respondents cannot articulate clearly?
Ask for concrete examples: 'Can you give me someone who is [construct pole] and someone who is [opposite pole]?' Ask for behavioral anchors: 'What would [construct] look like in action?' Record the original words, then ask for clarification; the implicit pole of a construct (e.g., 'tall' naturally opposes 'short') is often clearer than the explicit opposite the respondent provides.
Can I compare grids across participants?
Direct comparison is difficult because constructs are idiosyncratic. However, you can identify common themes by qualitative analysis (which constructs emerge across participants?), or use a mixed approach: elicit individual grids, then ask all participants to rate elements on some shared constructs while preserving individual ones. This bridges idiographic and nomothetic approaches.
How many elements and constructs do I need?
Minimum: 7-8 elements to elicit diverse constructs; fewer creates redundancy. Maximum: 15-20 elements (larger grids become tedious). Constructs typically emerge after 10-20, though more can be elicited. Stop eliciting when new constructs repeat themes already captured (saturation).
