Implicit Association Test
Also known as: IAT, Implicit Attitude Test
The Implicit Association Test (IAT) is a computerized measure designed to detect automatic associations between concepts in memory, such as implicit attitudes toward social groups or implicit self-concepts. Introduced by Greenwald, McGhee, and Schwartz in 1998, it infers the strength and valence of associations from the ease and speed with which people categorize stimuli when pairing concepts, revealing unconscious biases and attitudes that may not appear in explicit self-report measures.

When to use it
Use the IAT when measuring automatic associations, unconscious attitudes, or implicit biases that participants may not report explicitly or may be motivated to conceal. It is valuable in research on prejudice, self-esteem, consumer preferences, and psychological disorders (e.g., threat associations in anxiety). It is most useful when explicit measures are unreliable due to social desirability bias, and when examining populations (children, clinical samples) who may have difficulty articulating attitudes.

What does a high D-score really mean?
A high D-score indicates fast response times when two concepts are paired on the same key and slower times when they are paired oppositely. This pattern is interpreted as evidence of a strong implicit association, but interpretation depends on context: the IAT cannot directly tell whether this reflects evaluative attitudes, semantic associations, or familiarity. Researchers must specify what association is being measured theoretically.
Why is IAT reliability low if it's measuring implicit attitudes?
Low test-retest reliability suggests either that implicit associations are genuinely unstable (influenced by recent experiences and context), or that the IAT measures something other than stable attitudes. This debate remains unresolved; many argue the IAT measures attitudes plus task-specific factors (processing speed, response strategy), reducing reliability.
Does a high IAT score on race-negative pairings mean I'm prejudiced?
Not necessarily in a simple sense. A high D-score on race-negative pairings indicates an implicit association, but does not directly measure conscious attitudes, intentions, or behavior. The IAT has weak-to-moderate predictive validity for discriminatory behavior. Many factors contribute: semantic knowledge, familiarity, exposure biases, and cognitive processing style all influence scores.
Can I use single-block IATs or shortened versions?
Single-block IATs reduce administration time but sacrifice reliability and are not recommended for individual assessment. For research purposes, the full 7-block design (warm-up, practice compatible, practice incompatible, test incompatible, practice reverse, test compatible, reverse-compatible) is standard. Shorter variants can be used for group comparisons if reliability is acknowledged as a limitation.
