Eye-tracking analysis is a method for recording and quantifying eye movements and gaze patterns during visual tasks, providing direct measures of visual attention, comprehension, and cognitive processing. Advancing from mechanical devices to high-speed infrared cameras, eye tracking enables researchers to identify where people look, for how long, and in what sequence—revealing cognitive processes underlying reading, scene perception, decision-making, and attention.

When to use it
Use eye tracking when measuring visual attention, cognitive load, comprehension processes, or expertise differences in visual tasks. It is particularly valuable for reading research, design evaluation (websites, user interfaces), expert-novice comparisons (radiologists reading scans, pilots monitoring instruments), and clinical assessment (attention deficits, autism spectrum traits).

What is the difference between fixations and saccades?
Fixations are moments when the eye pauses on a location (typically 100-300 milliseconds), during which visual information is processed. Saccades are rapid eye movements between fixations (lasting 30-100 ms) that are typically too fast for detailed processing. Researchers analyze fixation locations, durations, and sequences to infer cognitive processes.
How accurate is eye tracking, and does it matter?
Modern eye trackers achieve 0.5-1.0 degrees spatial accuracy, sufficient for most behavioral research but potentially limiting for fine-grained analysis of small stimuli. Accuracy depends on tracker quality, calibration, and head movement. Worst-case drift over time can reduce effective accuracy; frequent recalibration or drift correction improves performance.
Can I use eye tracking with younger children or people with motor impairments?
Yes, but with caveats. Remote eye trackers (non-contact, camera-based) are easier for children than chin-rest devices. Some individuals with severe motor impairments benefit from eye tracking as an assistive communication tool. However, calibration can be challenging in very young children, and data quality may be lower than in typical adult samples.
How many participants do I need for eye-tracking studies?
Sample size depends on question and effect size. Pilot work suggests 20-30 participants per group is common for between-subjects designs. Eye-tracking data is rich (thousands of samples per participant), improving statistical power. Preregistration and power analysis based on pilot data are recommended, especially for published research.
