Minimalist Program

Minimalist Program (MP) Framework · Also known as: Minimalism, MP Grammar

The Minimalist Program (MP) is a framework for generative syntax developed by Noam Chomsky in 1995, designed to explain linguistic structure while assuming the fewest possible theoretical mechanisms. The program seeks principles that are simple, elegant, and motivated by language evolution. It addresses core questions: What principles explain language structure? Why do languages vary? Why do humans have language? The MP has become the dominant paradigm in theoretical syntax, though it remains controversial and subject to ongoing refinement.

When to use it

Use the Minimalist Program when you need to explain syntactic patterns in a principled, parsimonious way, when comparing languages to identify systematic variation, or when studying language acquisition and evolution. The framework is most useful for core syntax (movement, binding, agreement). It assumes Universal Grammar (innate, language-specific principles) and is less suited to sociolinguistic, pragmatic, or heavily usage-based phenomena.

What are parameters, and how do they account for language variation?

Parameters are binary choices (or small-scale options) in a principle, allowing limited systematic variation. For example, the null-subject parameter: languages set it to 'yes' (allowing dropped subjects like Spanish) or 'no' (requiring subjects like English). By setting parameters differently, one universal grammar generates the observed diversity of languages.

Does Minimalism assume there is an innate Universal Grammar?

Yes, the Minimalist Program is built on the assumption of Universal Grammar—language-specific principles innate to humans. This is a defining feature of the generative tradition. However, the scope and nature of UG remain controversial; some scholars argue against UG or propose that linguistic principles emerge from general cognitive principles rather than language-specific modules.

How does movement work in the Minimalist Program?

Movement is reanalyzed as the relocation of linguistic elements triggered by feature-checking requirements (e.g., finite clauses need a subject in the specifier of an inflectional head). An element moves from one position to another to satisfy these formal features. Movement leaves a 'trace' (a silent copy) in the original position, connecting the moved element to its theta-role.
