Pilot ABA Design — Pilot ABA Reversal Design

The Pilot ABA Design is a small-scale single-subject experiment that applies the ABA reversal structure — baseline, intervention, withdrawal — to test the feasibility, acceptability, and preliminary effect of an intervention before committing to a full-scale study. It provides early evidence of whether the treatment produces a detectable change and whether the reversal is ethically and practically achievable.

When to use it

Use a Pilot ABA Design when you are developing or adapting a behavioral or clinical intervention and need preliminary evidence of its effect and the feasibility of the ABA reversal procedure before conducting a larger study. It is appropriate in applied behavior analysis, special education, rehabilitation, and behavioral medicine when participant samples are small and repeated-measures data can be collected. Do NOT use this design when the target behavior is dangerous and withdrawal would place the participant at risk; in those cases, a multiple baseline design is safer. Do not use it as a standalone confirmatory test — pilot results are inherently underpowered and cannot replace a properly powered replication.

Strengths & limitations

Strengths
  • Provides preliminary evidence of a functional relationship between the intervention and the target behavior with very few participants.
  • Simultaneously tests both the intervention effect and the feasibility of the ABA protocol, yielding two streams of information from one small study.
  • Repeated within-participant measurement increases sensitivity to individual-level change without requiring large group samples.
  • Early identification of procedural problems (delivery fidelity, participant tolerance) allows protocol revision before a costly full-scale study.
Limitations
  • Findings are limited to the individual(s) studied and cannot be generalized statistically to a population.
  • The withdrawal phase may be ethically or practically impossible if the target behavior is harmful or if skills acquired during intervention should not be reversed.
  • Small pilot samples make it difficult to distinguish a true functional relationship from coincidental trends or measurement artifacts.
  • Carryover effects — when intervention effects persist into the A2 phase — can prevent a clean reversal and compromise interpretation.

How is a Pilot ABA Design different from a standard ABA design?

The structure is identical — baseline, intervention, withdrawal — but the purpose differs. A standard ABA design is used to demonstrate a functional relationship as a primary finding. A Pilot ABA design is used to test whether the procedure is feasible and to generate preliminary effect-size estimates to inform a larger study. The pilot analysis therefore includes feasibility metrics (recruitment, fidelity, burden) in addition to the behavioral outcome data.

How many participants do I need in a Pilot ABA study?

Pilot ABA designs often use one to three participants. The goal is not statistical power — it is to identify procedural problems and obtain preliminary data. If you need to demonstrate replication across individuals, consider extending to a small multiple-participant series or a multiple baseline design across participants.

What if the behavior does not reverse in the A2 phase?

A failure to reverse can indicate carryover (the intervention effect persists beyond its application), a confound (something else changed), or that the behavior has become self-sustaining. In a pilot, this is a valuable finding — it tells you the reversal assumption may not hold and that an ABAB or multiple baseline design may be more appropriate for the full study.

Can I use visual analysis in a Pilot ABA design?

Yes. Visual analysis of graphed data — inspecting level, trend, and variability within and across phases — is the standard analytic approach in single-subject research and is appropriate for pilot ABA data. Effect-size metrics such as Tau-U or non-overlap of all pairs (NAP) can supplement visual analysis but should be interpreted cautiously given the small number of data points typical in a pilot.

Is a Pilot ABA design publishable on its own?

Yes, especially in applied behavior analysis, special education, and rehabilitation journals that routinely publish single-subject research. The key is to frame the study explicitly as a pilot, report both feasibility and outcome data, and acknowledge limitations regarding generalization. Many journals welcome pilot single-subject studies as a first step toward evidence-based practice development.
