The method is best suited to mature processes where sufficient historical or collectable data exist (typically at least 30–50 data points per key variable). Do not use it for genuinely novel product or service design (use DMADV/DFSS instead), for problems where root causes are already known and only implementation is needed (a Kaizen event alone is faster), or for purely exploratory or social-science questions where statistical process metrics are not applicable. Hybrid DMAIC requires a cross-functional team with basic statistical literacy and should not be launched without clear executive sponsorship.

When should I use DMAIC versus DMADV?
