Blocked ABA Design — Blocked Reversal Single-Subject Design

The Blocked ABA Design is a single-subject experimental approach that combines the classic ABA reversal logic (baseline, intervention, withdrawal) with block-based session organization to control for time-related or contextual nuisance variation. By grouping observation sessions into blocks — such as days, weeks, or settings — and ensuring phase transitions align to block boundaries, the design isolates the effect of an intervention on an individual participant's repeated behavior measures more rigorously than an unblocked ABA.

When to use it

Use a Blocked ABA Design when you are studying a single participant or a small series of individuals, the target behavior is reversible (it is ethically acceptable and logically plausible for it to return to baseline once the intervention is withdrawn), and you have reason to suspect that day-of-week, time-of-day, session fatigue, or other cyclical context effects may confound phase comparisons. The design is well suited to applied behavior analysis, special education, rehabilitation, and clinical psychology. Do not use it when the target behavior is unlikely or unethical to reverse (e.g., a safety-critical learned skill), when carry-over effects from the intervention are expected to persist after withdrawal, or when the research question requires generalization across participants — in those cases, a multiple baseline or ABAB design is more appropriate.

  • Provides within-participant replication of the treatment effect through the A-B-A sequence, strengthening causal inference for a single individual.
  • Block organization controls for time-varying nuisance factors (day-of-week cycles, fatigue, practitioner routines) that can distort unblocked phase comparisons.

Limitations
  • Requires that the behavior is ethically reversible — returning a participant to no-treatment baseline may be inappropriate for some skills or problem behaviors.
  • Findings are specific to the individual; replication across participants is needed before broader generalization can be claimed.
  • Carry-over or learning effects can prevent the behavior from returning to A1 levels in the A2 phase, undermining the reversal logic.
  • The design provides only three phases, limiting the number of replications within a single study; ABAB or multiple-baseline designs offer stronger within-study replication.
  • Block definition adds procedural complexity; poorly defined blocks provide little nuisance control and increase scheduling burden.

What makes this design 'blocked' rather than a standard ABA?

In a standard ABA design, sessions are scheduled sequentially without regard to cyclical contextual factors. In a Blocked ABA, sessions are organized into blocks — matched groups defined by a recurring time unit or setting — so that periodic nuisance variation affects all phases equally rather than systematically biasing one phase. The three-phase reversal logic is otherwise identical.

When should I choose ABA over ABAB?

ABA uses three phases (baseline, intervention, withdrawal). ABAB adds a second intervention phase, providing one more within-study replication of the treatment effect. If time and ethics permit, ABAB offers stronger evidence. Use ABA when constraints of time, resources, or ethics limit you to a single reversal, accepting that one replication is weaker than two.

What if the behavior does not reverse in the A2 phase?

Non-reversal can occur due to carry-over learning or because a confound drove the phase-B change. A non-reversing ABA cannot confirm the intervention's causal role. Options include extending the A2 phase, documenting the carry-over as a finding, or switching to a multiple baseline design if reversal was not expected to occur.

How do I define blocks in practice?

Blocks should map onto a meaningful recurring unit in the research context — school weeks, therapy shifts, medication cycles, or day-of-week pairs. Each block should contain the same number of sessions and the same mix of time slots. Phase transitions should begin at block boundaries so that no block straddles a phase change, preserving the nuisance-control logic of blocking.

Can this design be used with multiple participants?

Yes, but each participant constitutes a separate replication rather than a sample for group analysis. Each individual's data are graphed and interpreted independently. When the same treatment effect is demonstrated across several individuals using the same blocked ABA protocol, the cross-participant pattern strengthens external validity — this is called a replication series in single-case methodology.
