Revised Simos Procedure — deck-of-cards rank-based weight elicitation (Figueira & Roy 2002)

REVISED-SIMOS (Revised Simos Procedure — deck-of-cards rank-based weight elicitation (Figueira & Roy 2002)) is a weight subjective multi-criteria decision-making (MCDM) method introduced by Figueira, J., Roy, B. in 2002. It turns a decision matrix of alternatives scored on multiple criteria into a structured, reproducible result.

When to use it

The Revised Simos procedure asks the DM to rank criteria cards from least to most important, and to insert blank cards between consecutive criteria to indicate the importance gap. More blank cards = larger gap in importance. Weights are proportional to the adjusted rank position u_j.

Strengths & limitations

Strengths
  • Follows a transparent, reproducible computational procedure that can be audited step by step.
  • Handles multiple criteria of differing scales and units within a single decision matrix.
Limitations
  • Results depend on the chosen normalisation, weights, and parameter settings.
