Gaussian Centroid Defuzzification — Crisp representative of Gaussian fuzzy number

DEFUZZ-CENTROID-GAUSSIAN (Gaussian Centroid Defuzzification — Crisp representative of Gaussian fuzzy number) is a defuzzification multi-criteria decision-making (MCDM) method introduced by Zadeh, L.A. in 1965. It turns a decision matrix of alternatives scored on multiple criteria into a structured, reproducible result.

When to use it

For symmetric Gaussian: defuzzified value = μ directly (no computation needed). σ only matters for overlap and aggregation, not defuzzification. For asymmetric Gaussian: x* shifts toward the heavier tail.

Strengths & limitations

Strengths
  • Follows a transparent, reproducible computational procedure that can be audited step by step.
  • Handles multiple criteria of differing scales and units within a single decision matrix.
Limitations
  • Assumes full compensation — a strong score on one criterion can offset a weak score on another.
