Modified TOPSIS based on D-Numbers (Deng Evidence Theory)

D-TOPSIS (Modified TOPSIS based on D-Numbers (Deng Evidence Theory)) is a ranking multi-criteria decision-making (MCDM) method introduced by Fei, L., Hu, Y., Xiao, F., Chen, L., Deng, Y. in 2016. It turns a decision matrix of alternatives scored on multiple criteria into a structured, reproducible result.

D-TOPSIS

When to use it

D-TOPSIS (Fei et al. 2016) handles incomplete/uncertain information via D-numbers (Deng 2012). Each matrix entry D_{ij} = {(B_k, v_k)} with Σ v_k ≤ 1. Step F0 converts each D-number to its expected crisp value E(D) = Σ_k v_k·x_k / Σ_k v_k; if multiple experts, first combine via Dempster orthogonal sum. Steps F1–F5 then run standard TOPSIS on the crisp expected-value matrix. Higher C* = closer to ideal.

Strengths & limitations

Strengths
  • Follows a transparent, reproducible computational procedure that can be audited step by step.
  • Handles multiple criteria of differing scales and units within a single decision matrix.
Limitations
  • May exhibit rank reversal when alternatives are added to or removed from the set.
  • Assumes full compensation — a strong score on one criterion can offset a weak score on another.
