Using Fortescue's symmetrical components method (1918), engineers calculate fault currents to design protection relays and equipment ratings. It is essential for ensuring safe and reliable power system operation.Protection relay coordination ensures that when a fault occurs, the relay nearest to the fault operates first, isolating only the faulted section while keeping healthy portions of the network energized. This selective clearing strategy minimizes service disruption and is achieved by carefully coordinating pickup currents and time delays across a series of relays. It is fundamental to reliable power system operation.
