การออกแบบการวิจัยแบบผสมผสานเชิงปริมาณเป็นหลักแบบลำดับขั้น (Sequential quantitative-priority mixed design) คือการเก็บรวบรวมและวิเคราะห์ข้อมูลเชิงปริมาณก่อน จากนั้นจึงตามด้วยการเก็บข้อมูลเชิงคุณภาพเพื่อขยายความ อธิบาย หรือให้บริบทแก่ผลการวิจัยเชิงปริมาณ โดยองค์ประกอบเชิงปริมาณจะได้รับน้ำหนักความสำคัญมากกว่าในการศึกษาโดยรวม ซึ่งหมายความว่าคำถามวิจัยหลักและข้อสรุปต่างๆ จะอิงอยู่กับหลักฐานเชิงปริมาณเป็นหลัก โดยองค์ประกอบเชิงคุณภาพจะมีบทบาทเสริมในการอธิบาย
