การเรียนรู้แบบกำกับตนเองออนไลน์ (online SSL) เป็นการฝึกโครงข่ายประสาทเทียมด้วยข้อมูลที่ไม่มีป้ายกำกับซึ่งมาถึงตามลำดับหรือเป็นสตรีม โดยใช้สัญญาณกำกับดูแลที่สร้างขึ้นโดยอัตโนมัติ (pretext tasks) แทนป้ายกำกับจากมนุษย์ ด้วยการปรับปรุงโมเดลอย่างต่อเนื่องเมื่อข้อมูลใหม่ไหลเข้ามา ทำให้สามารถสร้างการแทนค่า (representations) ที่พัฒนาอย่างต่อเนื่องได้โดยไม่ต้องจัดเก็บชุดข้อมูลทั้งหมด ซึ่งมีความสำคัญอย่างยิ่งสำหรับระบบแบบเรียลไทม์ อุปกรณ์ปลายทาง (edge devices) และสถานการณ์ที่จำกัดความเป็นส่วนตัว
