Empirical Bayes
Empirical Bayes (EB) คือกลยุทธ์การประมาณค่า ซึ่ง Herbert Robbins ได้นำเสนอในปี 1956 และพัฒนาต่อยอดเป็นตัวประมาณค่าแบบหด (shrinkage estimators) ที่นำไปใช้ได้จริงโดย Bradley Efron และ Carl Morris ในปี 1973 โดยที่พารามิเตอร์เหนือ (hyperparameters) ของการแจกแจงก่อน (prior distribution) จะถูกประมาณค่าจากข้อมูลที่สังเกตได้ผ่านทางความควรจะเป็นตามขอบเขต (marginal likelihood) แทนที่จะกำหนดไว้ล่วงหน้า ผลลัพธ์ที่ได้คือการแจกแจงภายหลัง (posterior distribution) ที่ยังคงโครงสร้างแบบเบย์ (Bayesian structure) ไว้ แต่ใช้พารามิเตอร์เหนือที่ได้จากข้อมูลแทนค่าที่มาจากความเชื่อส่วนบุคคล เป็นการเชื่อมโยงระหว่างการหดแบบความถี่ (frequentist shrinkage) และการอนุมานแบบเบย์เต็มรูปแบบ (full Bayesian inference)
