Awali ilibuniwa na David Altheide kama uchanganuzi wa maudhui wa kiethnografia (ECA), unachanganya ukali wa kimfumo wa uchanganuzi wa maudhui wa jadi na mantiki ya tafakari, inayojirudia ya uchunguzi wa kiethnografia, ukimruhusu mtafiti kuingiliana daima na data na kurekebisha makundi ya uchanganuzi kadri maana mpya zinavyojitokeza kutoka shambani.
