Uchanganuzi wa vipengele vya metali nzito ni uamuzi wa kimatibabu na kijiokemia wa aina za kikemikali (speshi) na ugawaji wa metali zenye sumu (risasi, kadimiamu, kromiamu, zinki, shaba) katika udongo, mchanga, na maji. Upatikanaji wa metali kwa viumbe hai—sehemu inayopatikana kwa viumbe—inategemea sana vipengele: metali iliyofungwa kwenye vitu hai vya udongo au oksidi za chuma haisogei na haipatikani kwa viumbe; metali iliyoyeyuka au inayobadilishana hupatikana kwa urahisi na huwa na sumu.
