Flerstegs urval av typiska fall är en avsiktlig strategi som väljer representativa enheter med genomsnittlig profil på varje nivå i en hierarkisk struktur — till exempel, typiska klassrum inom typiska skolor, eller typiska anställda inom typiska avdelningar. Det används när forskningsmålet är att beskriva eller illustrera den vanliga funktionen hos ett nestat fenomen snarare än att fånga dess ytterligheter eller fulla variation.
