Merenje visine stabla — određivanje vertikalnog rastojanja od tla do vrha stabla — predstavlja kamen temeljac inventure šuma i procene biomase. Od klasičnih optičkih instrumenata (klinometar, Abney nivelir) do modernih laserskih hipsometara i LiDAR-a iz vazduha, kvantifikacija visine stabla omogućava izračunavanje zapremine, biomase, indeksa staništa (produktivnosti) i karakterizaciju strukture šume, što je ključno za upravljanje, istraživanje i obračun ugljenika.
