Funcționarea diferențială a itemilor politomi detectează dacă un item de test sau de sondaj cu mai mult de două categorii de răspuns ordonate (de exemplu, scale de tip Likert, itemi cu credit parțial) funcționează diferit între grupuri precum genul, etnia sau mediul lingvistic, după controlul pentru trăsătura latentă măsurată. Extinde metodele clasice de DIF binar la formatele de răspuns ordinal.
