A misinformation correction experiment tests whether a factual correction can reduce belief in a political misperception. In Nyhan and Reifler's influential 2010 design, all respondents read a misleading claim and a random subset also read a correction, after which their factual beliefs are measured. Their alarming finding was a backfire effect: for some groups, corrections increased rather than decreased misperceptions among those ideologically threatened by the fact. When to use it

Use a misinformation correction experiment when you need a causal estimate of whether a specific correction reduces a specific misperception, and to test for partisan heterogeneity or backfire. It is well suited to evaluating fact-checking formats, source credibility, and message design, and to studying the gap between corrected beliefs and unchanged attitudes. It is less appropriate when the question is long-run belief persistence beyond a single session, when the misperception is too obscure or too entrenched to move in a brief study, or when the design cannot include realistic corrections without confounding source effects with the correction itself.

What is the backfire effect?

The backfire effect is when a factual correction increases, rather than decreases, belief in the falsehood among a group for whom the fact is ideologically threatening. Nyhan and Reifler reported such effects for certain conservative misperceptions, suggesting corrections could be counterproductive. The phenomenon is group-specific, so it is detected by estimating correction effects separately by partisanship, and a positive effect among the threatened group is the signature of backfire.

Is the backfire effect real and common?

It appears to be rare. Wood and Porter, replicating across many issues with large samples, found that corrections generally move beliefs toward the truth and that backfire is hard to reproduce. Why might corrections change beliefs but not attitudes?

Factual beliefs and political attitudes are distinct. A respondent can accept a corrected fact yet retain the attitude it was supposed to support, by reinterpreting the fact, attributing it differently, or weighting other considerations, a pattern consistent with partisan motivated reasoning. This is why correction experiments often measure downstream attitudes and behavior separately, finding that getting the facts right is necessary but not sufficient to change political opinions.
