Motivated Reasoning Experiment
Also known as: Directional Motivated Reasoning Study, Biased Assimilation Experiment, Disconfirmation Bias Paradigm
A motivated reasoning experiment tests whether people process political information to reach conclusions they are directionally motivated to hold rather than the most accurate ones. Building on Kunda's (1990) theory and crystallized by Taber and Lodge (2006), these designs expose partisans to attitude-congruent and incongruent arguments and measure biased assimilation, disconfirmation bias, attitude polarization, and selective exposure.

Use a motivated reasoning experiment to establish causally that directional goals, not just information, shape how citizens evaluate political evidence, sources, and arguments. It is appropriate for studying misinformation resistance, partisan bias, backfire effects, and the limits of corrective information. Pre-measure attitudes and sophistication (the key moderators), include a balanced-information condition to detect polarization, and consider manipulating accuracy goals to separate directional from accuracy motivation.

What is the difference between accuracy and directional motivation?
Accuracy motivation is the goal of reaching the correct conclusion regardless of its content; directional motivation is the goal of reaching a particular, preferred conclusion. Motivated reasoning experiments try to show that, under directional goals, people expend cognitive effort to defend prior beliefs (counterarguing, biased evaluation), whereas accuracy goals or incentives can reduce this bias.
Why are sophisticated partisans often more biased?
Counterarguing requires knowledge and cognitive resources. Sophisticated partisans possess the information needed to generate counterarguments against uncongenial evidence and to bolster congenial evidence, so they engage in more, not less, motivated reasoning. This finding overturns the intuition that knowledge neutralizes bias and is central to Taber and Lodge's results.
Are backfire effects real?
The backfire effect, where a correction makes a false belief stronger, was an influential early finding, but several large preregistered studies have failed to replicate it robustly. The current view is that motivated reasoning reliably produces biased assimilation and resistance to correction, while outright backfire is rarer and context-dependent than initially believed.
