Lokal hotspot-analyse bruker Getis-Ord Gi*-statistikken for å identifisere spesifikke geografiske steder der høye eller lave verdier klynger seg sammen mer enn forventet ved tilfeldighet. I motsetning til globale mål som gir en enkelt oppsummering for hele studieområdet, produserer denne lokale statistikken en z-score for hvert objekt, og peker nøyaktig ut hvor statistisk signifikante hotspots og cold spots forekommer.
