Forest Canopy Closure Assessment and Overstory Quantification
Een eenvoudig maar krachtig concept: hoe meer bosdekking de grond bedekt, hoe minder licht de ondergroei bereikt en hoe dichter de structuur van de overkapping is. Boomdekking is direct gerelateerd aan biodiversiteit (veel soorten hebben specifieke lichtregimes nodig), regeneratiepotentieel (schaduwtolerante versus schaduwintolerante soorten) en microklimaat (temperatuur, vochtigheid). Door te kwantificeren hoeveel van de hemel wordt geblokkeerd door boomkronen, beoordeelt men snel de overkappingstructuur en de competitieve omgeving zonder individuele boomafmetingen te meten. Veldmethoden zijn snel; teledetectie maakt monitoring van muur tot muur mogelijk.
