Empirical Bayes
Empirical Bayes (EB) is een schattingsstrategie, geïntroduceerd door Herbert Robbins in 1956 en ontwikkeld tot praktische 'shrinkage estimators' door Bradley Efron en Carl Morris in 1973, waarbij de hyperparameters van de prior-verdeling worden geschat uit de waargenomen data via de marginale aannemelijkheid (marginal likelihood) in plaats van vooraf te worden gespecificeerd. De resulterende posterior behoudt een Bayesiaanse structuur, maar vervangt subjectieve hyperparameters door data-gedreven hyperparameters, waarmee 'frequentist shrinkage' en volledige Bayesiaanse inferentie worden overbrugd.
