A reference accuracy study verifies the references in published work against their sources to estimate how often citations are wrong, distinguishing bibliographic errors (mistakes in author, title, year, volume, or pages) from quotation errors (cases where the cited source does not actually support the claim attributed to it). The method draws a sample of references, checks each one against the original document, and reports error rates as proportions with confidence intervals, often classifying errors by severity. Such studies have repeatedly found troubling rates: reviews of medical research, synthesized by Mogull (2017), put the quotation error rate near 14.5 percent, and Smith and Cumberledge (2020) found substantial quotation errors even in general science journals. Use a reference accuracy study when you want to quantify the reliability of citations in a journal, field, or body of work, to justify or evaluate citation-checking and reference-verification services, or to investigate how citation errors propagate through the literature. It is appropriate whenever you can sample references and obtain the cited sources for verification, and when the question concerns the fidelity of the scholarly record rather than the volume or influence of citations. It is less suitable when source documents are inaccessible at scale, when the sample needed for adequate precision is prohibitively large to verify by hand, or when the interest is in why authors cite rather than whether they cite correctly, which citation context analysis addresses. Because verification is interpretive for quotation errors, clear criteria and ideally multiple checkers strengthen credibility.

What is the difference between a bibliographic error and a quotation error?
A bibliographic error is a mistake in the citation's metadata, an incorrect author name, year, volume, issue, or page range, that can make the source hard or impossible to locate. A quotation error is more serious: it means the cited source does not actually support the claim attributed to it, whether because the claim is wrong, oversimplified, or attributed to the wrong paper. Reference accuracy studies report the two separately because bibliographic errors mainly inconvenience readers, whereas quotation errors corrupt the substantive content of the scholarly record and can propagate as misinformation.
Why report a confidence interval and not just the error rate?
Because verifying references is laborious, samples are often modest, and a single percentage hides the uncertainty around it. A confidence interval expresses the range within which the true error rate plausibly lies given the sample size. Mogull's recalculated quotation error rate, for instance, is about 14.5 percent with a 95 percent interval of roughly 10.5 to 18.6 percent. Reporting the interval lets readers judge whether differences between journals or fields are meaningful or within sampling noise, and prevents over-interpreting a point estimate drawn from a small sample.
Why do quotation errors happen so often?
A major reason is that authors frequently copy references from other papers' reference lists rather than reading and verifying the original source, so an initial misquotation can be transmitted from paper to paper. Time pressure, reliance on abstracts, and reference-manager errors compound the problem. Because the original claim is rarely re-checked, a distorted finding can become entrenched as accepted fact. This propagation dynamic is precisely why reference accuracy studies focus on quotation fidelity and why citation-checking services and careful verification at the editorial stage are valuable countermeasures.
