Citation context analysis looks past the bare count of citations to ask why and how a work is cited, by reading the text surrounding each in-text reference and classifying its function, sentiment, and content. Where ordinary citation counting treats every reference as an equal vote, this method recognizes that citations differ: some are central to a paper's argument and others merely perfunctory, some confirm a cited finding and others dispute it, some use a method and others only mention a concept. Moravcsik and Murugesan's 1975 study of theoretical physics introduced the now-classic functional distinctions (conceptual versus operational, organic versus perfunctory, evolutionary versus juxtapositional, confirmative versus negational) and found that a large share of citations were perfunctory, casting doubt on citation counts as pure quality measures. Tahamtan and Bornmann's review situates this work within the broader question of what citation counts actually measure.

When to use it

Use citation context analysis when a raw citation count is too blunt and you need to know why and how works are cited, for example to assess whether a heavily cited paper is genuinely influential or merely conventionally name-checked, to study agreement and disagreement around a contested finding, or to evaluate citation behavior within a field. It suits research questions about the rhetorical and epistemic role of citations, citation sentiment, and the validity of citation-based indicators. It is less appropriate when full text and citing contexts are unavailable, when the scale is so large that reliable coding is infeasible without validated automatic classifiers, or when the question is purely about volume and reach, which simple citation counts answer adequately. Because the method rests on interpretive coding, it requires a clear codebook and demonstrated inter-coder reliability to yield credible results.

How does citation context analysis differ from ordinary citation counting?

Citation counting treats every citation as an equal, anonymous vote and asks only how many there are. Citation context analysis reads the text around each citation and asks what kind of citation it is: central or perfunctory, agreeing or disagreeing, borrowing a method or merely mentioning a concept. This distinction matters because Moravcsik and Murugesan found that a large share of citations are perfunctory, so two works with equal counts can have very different real influence. Context analysis recovers that lost information at the cost of much greater effort per citation.

What is the difference between citation function and citation sentiment?

They are distinct dimensions. Function describes the rhetorical role a citation plays, for example whether it supplies a concept or a technique, or whether it is essential to the argument or incidental. Sentiment or polarity describes the citing author's stance toward the cited work, positive, neutral, or negative. The classic scheme captures both: confirmative versus negational is essentially polarity, while conceptual versus operational and organic versus perfunctory are functional. Keeping the two dimensions separate avoids the common error of reading a method-borrowing citation as an endorsement, or a neutral mention as influence.

Can the coding be automated, and is it reliable?

Yes, citation-function and citation-sentiment classification are active computational tasks, using supervised classifiers and language models trained on annotated citation contexts. However, automation does not remove the need for validated ground truth: classifiers are trained and evaluated against human-coded labels, and their performance varies by category, with subtle or rare functions (such as negational citations) being hardest. Whether coding is manual or automatic, the standard of credibility is demonstrated reliability, reported as inter-coder agreement for human coding and as evaluation metrics against a held-out human-labeled set for classifiers.
