מגוון פונקציונלי מכמת את הטווח והתפלגות השפע של תכונות פונקציונליות (מורפולוגיה, פיזיולוגיה, התנהגות) בקרב מינים בקהילה. מדדי מגוון פונקציונלי, שפותחו על ידי Mouillot ועמיתיו (2008), מודדים עד כמה מינים שונים בתפקידיהם האקולוגיים ובאסטרטגיות ניצול המשאבים שלהם. בניגוד לעושר מינים (מספר המינים), מגוון פונקציונלי לוכד את רוחב האסטרטגיות האקולוגיות, ומנבא תפקוד ויציבות של המערכת האקולוגית.
