Les notes de terrain sont des enregistrements écrits détaillés créés par les chercheurs pendant ou immédiatement après une observation directe dans un cadre naturaliste. Elles capturent ce qui est vu, entendu et expérimenté — y compris les comportements, les interactions, les environnements physiques et les impressions analytiques du chercheur lui-même — formant la source de données primaire pour les études ethnographiques et observationnelles.
