Metsän inventointi otannalla on systemaattinen lähestymistapa metsän ominaisuuksien, kuten puuston tilavuuden, lajikoostumuksen ja biomassan, arvioimiseksi tutkimalla puita edustavan osajoukon sijaan suorittamalla tyhjentäviä laskentoja. Loetschin ja kollegoiden 1970-luvulla kehittämä menetelmä soveltaa tilastollista otantateoriaa metsän arviointiin ja muodostaa edelleen kestävän metsänhoidon ja luonnonvarojen seurannan perustan maailmanlaajuisesti.
