ResumenThe machine learning-augmented synthetic control method extends the classical synthetic control estimator by using penalized regression or other ML algorithms — such as lasso, ridge, or random forests — to construct the donor weights and to model pre-treatment outcome trajectories. The augmentation corrects for residual imbalance left by the standard weighting step, yielding lower bias when no perfect synthetic control exists. The Synthetic Control Method estimates the causal effect of a treatment or policy on a single treated unit by constructing a weighted combination of untreated units — the synthetic control — that closely resembles the treated unit before the intervention. The gap between the treated unit and its synthetic counterpart after the intervention is the estimated treatment effect.
