Readability analysis measures how well a text suits its intended audience by applying established readability formulas such as Flesch-Kincaid and Gunning Fog. The modern formula family was derived by Kincaid and colleagues in 1975, and it turns prose into a single score or target reading-grade level that signals how easy the text is to read.

When to use it

Readability analysis fits when you have text and need to judge whether its difficulty matches a target audience — assessing documents, instructions, educational materials, or public communications. It assumes a readability formula is available for the language of the text and that the text can be analysed at the sentence and syllable level. Around ten or more text units give a more stable reading; it is descriptive and comparative, not a model that needs training data.

Strengths
  • Simple and fast: a few surface counts yield an interpretable score with no training data required.
  • Produces a single comparable number, so texts can be ranked or checked against an audience's reading level.
  • Backed by long-established formulas (Flesch-Kincaid, Gunning Fog) with well-understood scales.
Limitations
  • Depends on a readability formula being available for the target language; English-derived formulas may not transfer.
  • Requires text that can be parsed into sentences and syllables, which is hard for very short or unconventional text.
  • Captures only surface features — sentence and word length — and ignores meaning, coherence, and reader background.

What does a readability score actually measure?

It measures surface difficulty using counts such as average sentence length and word or syllable complexity, combined by a formula like Flesch-Kincaid or Gunning Fog. A grade-level index estimates the schooling needed to read the text comfortably, while a reading-ease score places it on an easy-to-hard scale. It does not measure meaning, accuracy, or how well the text is written.

Which formula should I use?

Flesch Reading Ease and Flesch-Kincaid Grade Level are the most common and report ease and grade level respectively; Gunning Fog also targets a grade level. They use similar inputs and tend to agree in direction, so reporting more than one gives a more rounded picture.

Does it work for languages other than English?

Only if a readability formula exists for that language. Most classic formulas were derived for English, and applying them to other languages without a language-appropriate formula produces misleading scores.

How much text do I need?

The analysis assumes the text can be split into sentences and syllables, and around ten or more text units give a more stable estimate than a single short passage. Very short or unconventional text makes the counts unreliable.
