Field-based Convenience Sampling

Also known as: intercept sampling, on-site convenience sampling, street intercept sampling, field intercept survey

Field-based convenience sampling is a non-probability technique in which researchers recruit participants by approaching whoever is physically present and accessible at a chosen real-world location — a market, hospital waiting room, park, or transit hub. It is widely used in public health surveillance, marketing research, and exploratory social surveys when rapid, low-cost data collection is needed and probability sampling is not feasible.

When to use it

Use field-based convenience sampling when you need rapid, low-cost data from people who congregate at a specific physical location, and when probability sampling is impractical (no sampling frame exists, time or budget is severely limited). It suits exploratory studies, pilot testing of instruments, public health spot-checks, and descriptive snapshots of a local context. Do not use it when the goal is to produce estimates that can be statistically generalized to a broader population, when the research question requires a representative sample, or when the phenomenon of interest is rare and unlikely to appear in general foot-traffic. Also avoid it as a primary design in high-stakes policy research where sampling bias could seriously mislead decision-makers.

Strengths & limitations

Strengths
  • Fast and inexpensive — data can be collected within hours or days without a sampling frame.
  • Natural ecological validity: participants are recruited in the real-world contexts where the behaviour of interest actually occurs.
  • Useful for hard-to-reach groups who frequent specific venues (e.g., homeless shelters, needle exchanges) where other sampling frames do not exist.
  • Well-suited to pilot studies, instrument testing, and preliminary descriptive work before a larger probability-based study.
  • Flexible: sites and time-slots can be adjusted mid-study if early returns reveal unexpected gaps.
Limitations
  • Non-probability design — results cannot be generalized to the broader population and frequentist confidence intervals are not strictly valid.
  • Coverage limited to those physically present at the chosen site and time; people who avoid that location are systematically excluded.
  • Refusal bias: individuals who decline may differ meaningfully from those who agree, and refusal is often not recorded.
  • Interviewer-selection bias: without strict approach rules, fieldworkers unconsciously favour accessible, cooperative-looking individuals.

Frequently asked

How is field-based convenience sampling different from regular convenience sampling?

Regular convenience sampling is defined only by the non-random, availability-based selection logic and includes online panels, volunteer responses, and classroom samples. Field-based convenience sampling is a specific operational form in which recruitment happens in person at a physical real-world location. This adds ecological validity (participants are in their natural context) but restricts coverage to those physically present at that venue.

Can I add quotas to make my field-based convenience sample more representative?

Yes, and doing so upgrades the design to field-based quota sampling. You set targets for key demographic cells (e.g., 50% women, 40% aged 18–35) and fieldworkers continue approaching people until each cell is filled. This improves demographic representativeness but does not eliminate selection bias within cells. If you use quotas, report the design as quota sampling, not convenience sampling.

How many sites should I use?

There is no universal rule, but multiple sites that vary in time of day, day of week, and geographic sub-area substantially reduce the coverage limitation of a single-location design. For city-level studies, three to five sites spanning different neighbourhoods and visit-time strata is a common minimum.

Should I report refusal rates?

Yes. Refusal rates are a key quality indicator in any intercept study. Record the number of people approached, the number who were screened, and the number who completed the instrument. A refusal rate above roughly 30–40% should trigger a discussion of whether refusers differ systematically from completers.

Can I use confidence intervals with field-based convenience samples?

Strictly, frequentist confidence intervals assume a probability sample, so they are not technically valid for convenience samples. In practice, researchers sometimes report them as indicative bounds while acknowledging the non-probability design in the limitations section. A more honest approach is to focus on effect sizes and descriptive statistics and to frame conclusions as context-specific rather than population-representative.
