Time-sliced Mapping Review — Temporal Systematic Evidence Mapping

Time-sliced Systematic Mapping Review · Also known as: temporal mapping review, time-period mapping review, longitudinal evidence map, chronological mapping review

A time-sliced mapping review is a systematic evidence synthesis that partitions the search period into discrete temporal segments — such as five-year intervals — and constructs a separate evidence map for each slice. By comparing maps across periods, researchers can chart how topics emerge, peak, decline, or transform within a research field, producing a longitudinal picture of knowledge structure that a single-point mapping review cannot provide.

When to use it

Use a time-sliced mapping review when the primary goal is to describe how a research field has changed over time — not to estimate an average effect size. It is well suited to maturing research areas where significant conceptual or methodological shifts are suspected, and to funders or policymakers who need to understand historical patterns before commissioning new work. The method requires a sufficiently large literature so that each time slice yields a meaningful number of studies; if fewer than roughly ten studies exist per slice the temporal comparison will be dominated by noise rather than trend. Do not use it when the aim is to answer a focused effectiveness question (use meta-analysis or systematic review) or when the corpus is too recent or too sparse to support meaningful temporal segmentation.

  • Reveals how research topics, methods, and populations have shifted across time, providing unique longitudinal insight unavailable from a single-point map.
  • Identifies research gaps not only in topical coverage but in temporal coverage — periods where evidence is sparse or missing entirely.
  • Does not require quantitative synthesis or quality appraisal, making it feasible for heterogeneous literatures.
  • Produces actionable outputs for research funders and policymakers seeking to understand the trajectory of an evidence base.
  • Scalable: the same search and coding framework can be updated in future cycles to extend the temporal record.
Limitations
  • Sparse slices — if the literature is thin in early periods, maps for those slices carry high uncertainty and may mislead readers about genuine historical patterns.
  • No effect estimation — the method catalogues and describes studies but cannot answer 'does intervention X work?' questions; an additional meta-analysis would be required.
  • Coding and extraction across large corpora is labour-intensive, and the effort roughly multiplies with the number of time slices.
  • Changes in database indexing practices, journal scope, or terminology over time can create artifactual trends that do not reflect genuine shifts in research activity.

Frequently asked

How wide should each time slice be?

There is no universal standard. Five-year intervals are the most common choice in published time-sliced mapping reviews because they balance granularity with manageable corpus size. Narrower slices (two to three years) are appropriate for fast-moving fields with large literatures; broader slices (ten years) suit historical overviews of sparse literatures. The rationale for slice width should be stated explicitly in the methods section.

How is a time-sliced mapping review different from a thematic evolution analysis?

Both examine how research themes change over time, but thematic evolution analysis — as used in bibliometric tools such as SciMAT — applies algorithmic topic detection (often keyword co-occurrence clustering) to identify and track theme clusters automatically. A time-sliced mapping review uses predefined coding dimensions and researcher-led classification. The mapping approach allows richer descriptive categories but requires more manual labour; thematic evolution analysis scales better to very large corpora.

Do I need to register a protocol before starting?

Registration is strongly recommended. Platforms such as PROSPERO accept mapping review protocols, and pre-registering the time slices, coding framework, and eligibility criteria guards against post-hoc adjustments that could introduce bias. Registration also increases the transparency and replicability of the review.

Can I update a time-sliced mapping review to add new periods?

Yes, and this is one of the method's practical advantages. Provided the original coding framework is preserved and documented, a living or updatable mapping review can add new time slices as the evidence base grows, without re-screening the historical literature. This makes the method particularly efficient for research areas that produce a steady stream of new studies.

Is quality appraisal of individual studies required?

Not typically. Mapping reviews aim to describe the scope and distribution of the evidence base, not to appraise methodological quality for the purpose of synthesis. However, study design and sample characteristics are commonly extracted as coding dimensions, which provides an indirect picture of the methodological maturity of the field across time periods.
