Participatory Straussian Grounded Theory

Participatory Straussian grounded theory combines Strauss and Corbin's systematic, structured version of grounded theory with participatory research principles that give community members an active role in data generation, coding, and theory development. The result is a rigorously structured yet co-constructed theory about a social process, grounded in both the analytic procedures of axial coding and the lived authority of participants.

When to use it
Use participatory Straussian grounded theory when the research aims to develop substantive theory about a social process experienced by a specific community, and when community ownership of the findings — for advocacy, policy, or practice change — is a central goal. The Straussian paradigm is especially appropriate when the researcher wants an explicit, teachable coding structure and prefers systematic procedures to the more emergent feel of classic Glaserian GT. Do not use this design when the community cannot or will not sustain meaningful engagement throughout a multi-month study, when the research question calls only for description rather than theory generation, or when the phenomenon spans populations too diverse for a single participatory partnership to represent.

How is this different from standard Straussian grounded theory?
Standard Straussian GT is researcher-led from data collection through theory generation. The participatory variant redistributes analytic authority so that community members co-generate data, participate in coding sessions, challenge emerging categories, and validate the final theory. The coding procedures (open, axial, selective) remain the same; what changes is who has input at each stage and the governance structures that support that input.
How is it different from participatory classic or constructivist grounded theory?
The core distinction lies in the coding paradigm. Straussian GT uses a prescribed set of analytical categories — conditions, context, action/interaction strategies, consequences — that structure axial coding explicitly. Classic GT (Glaser) is more emergent and resists prescribed frameworks. Constructivist GT (Charmaz) foregrounds co-construction of meaning philosophically. Participatory Straussian GT inherits the systematic structure of Strauss and Corbin while adding community co-analysis at each stage.
How many participants are needed?
Straussian GT relies on theoretical sampling rather than a fixed sample size. Initial sampling is purposive; subsequent sampling is driven by emerging theory. A participatory design adds a governance layer of community co-researchers (typically 3–10 people) who are distinct from the broader participant sample, which may itself include 20–40 or more interviews before theoretical saturation.
What software is suitable for collaborative coding?
Platforms with multi-user access, such as ATLAS.ti Cloud or Dedoose, support simultaneous coding by geographically distributed community co-researchers. NVivo also supports shared projects. The platform choice matters less than establishing clear coding protocols and regular reconciliation meetings where discrepancies between coders are discussed and resolved analytically rather than statistically.
Can the participatory process undermine theoretical saturation?
It can delay saturation if community members continuously introduce new perspectives — which is actually analytically valuable. More commonly, the risk is the opposite: community partners may endorse saturation prematurely because they are invested in a particular theoretical framing. Researchers should treat member validation as an additional data source that may require further theoretical sampling rather than as a final sign-off.
