Multiple Case-Based Semiotic Analysis

Multiple case-based semiotic analysis is a qualitative research design that applies semiotic frameworks — the systematic study of signs, codes, and meaning-making — across two or more purposively selected cases. By combining the comparative logic of multiple case study research with the interpretive tools of semiotics (structural, Peircean, or Greimasian), it enables researchers to uncover how meaning is constructed and varied across distinct cultural, organisational, or communicative contexts.

When to use it
Use multiple case-based semiotic analysis when your research question concerns how meaning is constructed, negotiated, or varied across distinct but comparable contexts — for example, brand identity across markets, policy rhetoric across governments, or ritual artefacts across organisations. It is well suited to communication studies, media research, marketing, cultural studies, and organisational research where the primary data are sign-bearing texts, images, or artefacts rather than interview transcripts. Choose it over single-case semiotic analysis when comparison is theoretically essential. Do not use it when your question is about lived experience (use phenomenology), when data are numeric, or when the cases are too heterogeneous to support a common semiotic coding scheme.

How is this different from simply doing semiotic analysis on several texts?
The key difference is the explicit comparative logic borrowed from multiple case study methodology. A collection of separate semiotic readings is not the same as a multiple case design. In the latter, cases are selected for theoretical reasons (to replicate or extend a pattern), the same semiotic framework is applied consistently to each, and the cross-case comparison is the primary analytic move. This structured replication logic is what distinguishes the design from an ad hoc collection of readings.
How many cases do I need?
Yin's guidance on multiple case studies — typically a minimum of two to three cases for literal replication, four to six for theoretical replication — applies here. The number is driven by the replication logic, not by statistical power. Two carefully chosen, theoretically contrasting cases can be analytically more productive than six loosely related ones.
Which semiotic framework should I choose?
The choice depends on your data type and research question. Greimas's actantial model and semiotic square are especially useful for narrative-structured data (advertisements, stories, policy texts). Barthes's denotation/connotation levels suit visual or photographic data. Peirce's icon/index/symbol trichotomy fits studies of how signs refer to their objects (e.g., logos, brand symbols). Saussure's structural model works well for linguistic sign systems. Commit to one framework and apply it uniformly.
Can this design be combined with other qualitative methods?
Yes. Multiple case-based semiotic analysis is often embedded within a broader qualitative design. For instance, semiotic analysis of organisational artefacts can be triangulated with interviews (phenomenology or narrative analysis) to compare how signs are 'officially' constructed versus how members interpret them. The semiotic analysis provides structural description of the sign system; interviews add the actor's perspective.
How do I establish credibility and trustworthiness?
Key strategies include: (1) explicit documentation of the semiotic framework and all coding decisions before data analysis begins; (2) peer debriefing or a second analyst applying the same framework independently to at least one case; (3) member-checking where feasible (e.g., checking semiotic readings with cultural insiders); and (4) thick description of each case so readers can assess transferability to their own contexts.
