Single-blind Field Experiment

Also known as: single-masked field experiment, field experiment with single blinding, single-blind natural-setting trial

A single-blind field experiment combines real-world experimental conditions with partial blinding: either participants or outcome assessors — but not both — are kept unaware of treatment assignment. This design reduces demand characteristics or observer bias while preserving ecological validity, making it a practical middle ground when full double-blinding is logistically infeasible in naturalistic settings.

When to use it

Use a single-blind field experiment when you need causal evidence about an intervention's real-world effect and full double-blinding is not feasible — for instance when participants must be aware of receiving a service, or when the nature of the treatment is physically apparent. It is appropriate when demand characteristics on the participant side or observer bias on the assessor side is the primary threat to validity, and one-sided blinding addresses that threat adequately. Do NOT use it when double-blinding is achievable and the outcome is highly susceptible to both participant expectations and assessor subjectivity; in that case, a double-blind design is required. Also avoid it when the field setting makes even partial blinding impractical to maintain without contamination.

Strengths & limitations

Strengths
  • High ecological validity — results generalise to real-world conditions far better than purely laboratory-based studies.
  • Eliminates at least one major source of bias (participant demand characteristics or assessor expectation bias) through the blinding protocol.
  • Randomisation preserves internal validity and supports causal inference even in complex field conditions.
  • More feasible than double-blinding in many real-world intervention contexts where treatment nature cannot be concealed from participants.
Limitations
  • Single-blinding does not eliminate bias from the unblinded party: if participants know their condition, placebo and Hawthorne effects remain; if assessors know, observer bias persists.
  • Field settings introduce threats to internal validity — attrition, non-compliance, contamination — that are harder to control than in a laboratory.
  • Logistical complexity is greater than a standard (unblinded) field experiment; maintaining blind conditions over extended periods can be difficult.
  • Results may be specific to the particular field site, time period, and population, limiting generalisability beyond the study context.

Who exactly is kept blind in a single-blind field experiment?

It depends on which bias is the greater threat. In most social-science and health field experiments, participants are blinded — they do not know whether they are in the treatment or control condition — so that expectancy and demand effects cannot drive behaviour. In some designs it is instead the outcome assessors who are blinded, preventing their prior knowledge from influencing how they score or rate participants. Only one of these parties is kept unaware; if both can be blinded, the design becomes double-blind.

How do I maintain blinding in a field setting over weeks or months?

Plan blinding-maintenance procedures before the study starts: use neutral contact language in all communications, provide blinded staff only with the information needed for their role, conduct periodic blinding-integrity checks by asking participants or assessors to guess their condition, and keep unblinding logs. Even with these precautions, field single-blinding is often partial; report the degree of blinding achieved rather than assuming it held throughout.

Is a single-blind field experiment better than a non-blind field experiment?

In most cases yes, because it removes at least one identifiable source of systematic bias. However, the improvement is meaningful only if the blinded party's awareness would otherwise distort the outcome. If your outcome measure is an objective administrative record (e.g., hospital readmission, tax filing, purchase transaction) unlikely to be influenced by participant or assessor awareness, the practical gain from blinding may be modest and the complexity may not be warranted.

Should I report the design as 'single-blind' in my paper?

Yes, and you should specify which party was blinded and how blinding was implemented and verified. CONSORT reporting guidelines and most journal editors require this detail. Vague claims of 'blinded' conditions without specifying who was blinded and how it was maintained will typically draw reviewer criticism.

Can I use single-blind field experiment data with multilevel models?

Yes, and for cluster-randomised single-blind field experiments, multilevel (mixed-effects) modelling is the recommended analysis approach. It correctly partitions variance between the cluster level and the individual level, and provides unbiased standard errors that account for the non-independence of participants within clusters.
