Modified PSI method for objective weighting (Modified Preference Selection Index weighting)
MPSI (Modified PSI method for objective weighting (Modified Preference Selection Index weighting)) is a weight objective multi-criteria decision-making (MCDM) method introduced by Maniya, K., Bhatt, M. G. in 2010. It turns a decision matrix of alternatives scored on multiple criteria into a structured, reproducible result.

When to use it
MPSI extracts criterion weights from PSI's Preference Variation Values. Criteria with LOWER Φ_j (less variance, more consistent discrimination) get HIGHER weight. This is counterintuitive — it differs from ENTROPY and CRITIC which give higher weight to higher-variance criteria.
Strengths & limitations
- Follows a transparent, reproducible computational procedure that can be audited step by step.
- Handles multiple criteria of differing scales and units within a single decision matrix.
- Results depend on the chosen normalisation, weights, and parameter settings.
