VOSviewer and CiteSpace are specialized software tools designed to conduct bibliometric analysis and create science maps from research literature. VOSviewer (developed by Van Eck & Waltman, 2010) excels at creating publication landscapes through co-occurrence, co-citation, and bibliographic coupling analysis with intuitive visual output. CiteSpace (developed by Chaomei Chen, 2006) focuses on detecting emerging research trends and research fronts through direct citation analysis and specialized temporal algorithms. Together, these tools democratized science mapping, enabling researchers without programming expertise to visualize research domains comprehensively.

When to use it

Use VOSviewer for rapid landscape visualization, co-authorship analysis, and intuitive exploration of research domains. Its ease-of-use makes it ideal for researchers with limited programming expertise. Use CiteSpace when analyzing temporal trends, detecting emerging research, identifying influential papers, or assessing paradigm shifts. CiteSpace is particularly valuable for strategic assessment of research fields and for identifying breakthrough papers. For comprehensive analysis, use both: VOSviewer for static structure, CiteSpace for dynamics and emergence. Both are free (VOSviewer) or low-cost, making them accessible to all researchers.

  • Accessibility: graphical interface requires no programming knowledge; data import is straightforward.
  • Publication-quality output: maps are professionally formatted, suitable for presentations and publications.
  • Multiple analysis types: VOSviewer supports co-occurrence, co-citation, bibliographic coupling; CiteSpace supports temporal analysis and burst detection.

  • Community support: both have active user communities and extensive online tutorials.
Limitations
  • VOSviewer: less suitable for temporal/longitudinal analysis; requires multiple separate analyses for time slicing. Limited export options compared to raw data tools.
  • CiteSpace: steeper learning curve than VOSviewer; less intuitive for first-time users. Visualization quality less polished than VOSviewer.
  • Both: require manual data export from databases; no direct database API integration (must download files). Manual network customization can be time-consuming for large networks.
  • Both: parameter choices (thresholds, clustering algorithms) significantly affect output; users must experiment to find appropriate settings.

What data format does each tool require?

VOSviewer: RIS, BibTeX, or plain text formats. Data can be exported from Web of Science, Scopus, Google Scholar, PubMed, and others. Requires titles, keywords/abstracts, and optionally citations for co-citation analysis. CiteSpace: tab-delimited text (easiest via direct export from Web of Science); also supports RIS and other formats. Requires title, cited references, publication year. For temporal analysis, multiple records spanning years are recommended.

Which tool should I use first?

Start with VOSviewer for an initial landscape overview—it's faster and more intuitive. This helps you understand the field structure and set appropriate thresholds. Then use CiteSpace for temporal and trend analysis, if interested in research evolution. For most applications, VOSviewer alone is sufficient; CiteSpace is valuable if you need emerging trend detection or historical perspective.

How do I choose a minimum frequency threshold?

Plot the frequency distribution first (how many keywords appear 1×, 2×, 5×, 10×, etc.). Typically, there is a 'knee' where frequent items (noise) transition to rare items (signal). Set threshold just above this knee. Empirically: for datasets <1000 papers, threshold of 3–5 is typical; for >10,000 papers, threshold of 10–20. Start conservative (threshold=5) and adjust by inspecting resulting networks for coherence.

Can I combine VOSviewer and CiteSpace outputs?

Not directly through the tools, but yes manually. Export network data from both tools (most export to GraphML, Pajek, or CSV formats) and import into Gephi or other network visualization software for integrated analysis. Alternatively, perform separate analyses and report both: 'VOSviewer shows that X and Y are frequently co-cited; CiteSpace shows that X's citations have accelerated in recent years.'
