Viewshed Analysis

Also known as: visibility analysis, landscape archaeology

Viewshed analysis examines what is visible from specific locations or within a defined area using digital elevation models (DEMs) and geographic information systems (GIS). Pioneered by David Wheatley in the 1990s, the method reveals how landscape features (hilltops, valleys, water sources) controlled visibility and movement. Archaeologists use viewshed analysis to understand settlement placement, ritual monument visibility, and territorial organization in prehistoric and historic landscapes.

When to use it

Apply viewshed analysis when studying settlement organization, monument placement, or territorial control at landscape scales. Works well when combined with site distribution analysis. Particularly effective for studying hillforts, standing stones, and ceremonial centers.

  • Can test hypotheses about why sites were placed where they are
Limitations
  • DEMs have limited accuracy and resolution, affecting viewshed precision
  • Ancient landscapes may have been forested or had different topography than today
  • Visual factors are only one of many reasons for site location
  • Assumes people made decisions based on optimal visibility, which may not be true

What is the difference between viewshed and cumulative viewshed?

A viewshed shows what is visible from a single location. A cumulative viewshed combines viewsheds from multiple locations, showing which areas are visible from many sites versus few sites. Cumulative viewsheds reveal landscape-wide patterns of visibility and potential territorial organization.

How accurate are viewshed calculations?

Accuracy depends on DEM resolution and accuracy. Modern DEMs from satellite data have resolutions of 30-90 meters; some archaeological projects use finer-resolution LiDAR data (1-3 meters). For large regions, 30-meter DEMs are typical. Error increases with distance from the observation point.

Can viewshed analysis account for ancient vegetation?

Not directly—DEMs show only topography. Paleovegetation must be inferred from paleobotanical evidence and incorporated qualitatively. Some analyses simulate tree heights as obstructions to test sensitivity to vegetation assumptions.
