La teoria fonamentada constructivista basada en el camp integra la teoria fonamentada constructivista de Kathy Charmaz amb el treball de camp actiu en entorns naturals. En lloc de basar-se exclusivament en entrevistes retrospectives, el investigador entra al món dels participants —observant, interactuant i recopilant dades on es desenvolupen els processos socials—, alhora que codifica i construeix teoria. El resultat és una teoria substantiva fonamentada que està tant ancorada empíricament en contextos reals com coconstruïda epistemològicament entre el investigador i els participants.
