Tóm tắtSet-theoretic multimethod research (SMMR) integrates the cross-case logic of Qualitative Comparative Analysis with the within-case logic of process tracing. After QCA identifies the combinations of conditions that are necessary or sufficient for an outcome, SMMR uses the resulting solution terms to classify cases — typical, deviant, individually irrelevant — and to select cases for in-depth process tracing. Codified by Carsten Schneider and Ingo Rohlfing, it grounds the choice of cases and the search for mechanisms in set theory, so cross-case and within-case inference reinforce one another within a single, coherent framework. The most similar systems design (MSSD) is a small-N comparative strategy that selects cases as alike as possible on many background characteristics but differing on the outcome of interest. By matching cases so that most potential confounders are held roughly constant, the design isolates the few factors that vary alongside the outcome as the candidate causes. Rooted in John Stuart Mill's method of difference and named by Przeworski and Teune, it is a cornerstone of comparative politics for drawing causal inferences from a handful of countries or cases.
