Behavioral Mapping

Behavioral mapping is the systematic, time-sampled observation of how people actually occupy and move through a public space, recorded directly onto a plan of the site. Developed in the urban context by William H. Whyte's filmed studies of New York plazas and formalized into a public-life methodology by Jan Gehl, it produces an empirical picture of where people sit, stand, walk, and gather, rather than where designers assumed they would. The two core modes — place-centered mapping of who is doing what at fixed moments, and individual-centered tracking of how single people move — together turn the invisible life of a space into mappable data.

When to use it
Use behavioral mapping when you need objective evidence of how a public space is really used — to diagnose an underused plaza, to set a baseline before a redesign, to evaluate an intervention, or to test whether a space serves diverse users. Place-centered mapping suits questions about where stationary life concentrates; individual-centered mapping suits questions about movement, routes, and dwell time. It is less appropriate when the relevant behavior is private, indoor, or too sparse to sample, when ethics or sightlines prevent unobtrusive observation, or when you need people's reasons and perceptions, for which interviews or surveys are required instead.

What is the difference between place-centered and individual-centered mapping?
Place-centered mapping takes the whole space as the unit: at each sampled moment you record every person present, their location, and what they are doing, building a snapshot of the spatial distribution of activity. Individual-centered mapping takes one person as the unit: you follow a selected individual and trace their entire route, stops, and dwell time through the space. The first answers 'where does life concentrate?' and the second answers 'how do people move and how long do they stay?'
How does urban behavioral mapping differ from behavioral observation coding in psychology?
They share an observational logic but differ in unit and emphasis. Psychological behavioral observation coding (see the behavioral-observation-coding method) focuses on classifying the behavior of individuals or small groups — often indoors and over time — to study persons or interactions, with reliability built through coding schemes and inter-rater agreement. Urban behavioral mapping is fundamentally spatial: its output is a map of where activity occurs across a public setting, and its purpose is to inform the design and evaluation of physical space rather than to characterize individuals. Use this method when the question is about space; use behavioral-observation-coding when the question is about people's behavior per se.
How do I make a behavioral map representative rather than anecdotal?
Plan the time sampling before you start. Decide which days (weekday and weekend), which time slices (morning, midday, afternoon, evening), and at what interval you will sweep the space, then hold the protocol and coding scheme constant across all sessions. Record weather and any unusual events. Repeating the same systematic sampling across enough moments lets you average out one-off variation and report typical patterns instead of a single anecdotal snapshot.
