Weighted Typical Case Sampling

Most standard sampling methods aim for random selection to ensure statistical representativeness. Weighted typical case sampling, however, starts with purposive selection to ensure substantive representativeness. It selects cases that are archetypal or representative of the population's average characteristics, not outliers or extremes. After selection, probability weights are applied to correct for any differential selection probabilities or to align the sample with known population distributions. This hybrid approach aims to yield a sample that is both qualitatively representative of the norm and quantitatively generalizable to the population.
