Notational analysis is the systematic recording of the discrete events that make up a sporting performance, so that what happened on the field can be turned into objective, quantifiable evidence rather than the fallible recollection of coaches. Mike Hughes and Ian Franks, in their 2004 edited volume Notational Analysis of Sport, codified the discipline: define a coding system of actions, locations, and outcomes; tally events from video or live observation; and derive summary indicators that describe and discriminate performance. Hughes and Bartlett's 2002 paper on performance indicators added the crucial idea that raw counts must be turned into meaningful, normalized indices — and validated against the criterion of distinguishing successful from unsuccessful play — before they can guide coaching. It is appropriate wherever performance decomposes into discrete, observable events that can be reliably classified, and where you can access video or structured live observation. It is less suited to performances dominated by continuous, hard-to-discretize qualities, to situations where the events that matter cannot be observed, or to one-off matches where profile instability makes any single number a weak basis for inference.

What is the difference between notational analysis and a performance indicator?

Notational analysis is the whole process of systematically recording match events into a structured coding system and analyzing the resulting counts. A performance indicator is a specific output of that process: a function of the counts — typically a ratio, percentage, or composite — that summarizes an aspect of performance. Hughes and Bartlett stress that a valid performance indicator should relate to successful outcomes and be normalized to an appropriate exposure, so that it discriminates good from poor performance rather than merely reflecting volume of play.

How many matches do I need before a performance profile is reliable?

There is no universal number; it depends on the sport and the variability of the indicator. The recommended approach is to compute a running mean of each indicator as matches accumulate and observe when adding another match no longer changes the average appreciably — the point of stabilization. Volatile indicators stabilize slowly and need more matches; stable ones settle quickly. Reporting a profile from too few matches risks treating ordinary match-to-match noise as a real tendency.

Why does reliability matter so much in notational analysis?

Because the entire analysis rests on the assumption that events have been classified consistently. If two competent observers would assign the same events to different categories, the counts — and every indicator built from them — are arbitrary. Establishing reliability through inter-observer and intra-observer agreement (Cohen's kappa for categories, percentage error for counts) verifies that the coding system has clear, applicable definitions. Categories with unacceptable error should be redefined or merged before the data are used for decisions.
