Teori binaan berasas padang mengintegrasikan teori binaan (constructivist grounded theory) Kathy Charmaz dengan kerja lapangan aktif di suasana semula jadi. Berbanding hanya bergantung pada temu bual retrospektif, penyelidik memasuki dunia peserta — memerhati, berinteraksi, dan mengumpul data di tempat proses sosial berlaku — sambil secara serentak mengekod dan membina teori. Hasilnya ialah teori substantif berasas yang berlabuh secara empirikal dalam konteks sebenar dan dibina bersama secara epistemologi antara penyelidik dan peserta.
