Rangkaian saraf konvolusional (CNN) kendiri-selia mempelajari perwakilan visual yang berkuasa daripada imej tanpa label dengan menyelesaikan tugasan awal — seperti diskriminasi contoh kontras atau ramalan tampalan bertopeng — dan kemudian menala halus pada set berlabel kecil. Pendekatan ini mengurangkan pergantungan pada set data beranotasi besar secara dramatik sambil mengekalkan kekuatan pengekstrakan ciri spatial seni bina konvolusional.
