Tom Wilson's models of information behaviour, first sketched in his 1981 paper 'On user studies and information needs' and revisited in his 1999 'Models in information behaviour research,' provide an overarching map of how information behaviour arises and unfolds. Information need is treated not as a primitive but as something secondary to more basic human needs, emerging from a person-in-context. That need drives information-seeking behaviour, but the path from need to seeking is shaped by intervening variables — psychological, demographic, role-related, environmental and source-related — that act as barriers or enablers, and by activating mechanisms drawn from theories of stress and coping, risk and reward, and self-efficacy. The resulting seeking can take several modes, and information processing and use feed back to alter the original need.

When to use it

Use Wilson's models when you need an overarching framework to organize the many factors that shape why and how people seek (or avoid) information, or to situate more specific models and findings within a coherent whole. They are well suited to designing comprehensive user studies, to diagnosing why a population under-uses available information despite apparent need, and to generating hypotheses about barriers, enablers and activating conditions. They are less suited to fine-grained prediction of a single search session, to settings demanding a precise computational mechanism, or to capturing the moment-to-moment affective dynamics that stage models like the ISP detail. Because the models are conceptual maps, applying them well means using them to structure investigation of context, intervening variables and activating mechanisms rather than expecting them to output quantitative predictions directly.

What are intervening variables in Wilson's model?

They are the factors that stand between a felt information need and actual information-seeking behaviour, acting as barriers or enablers. Wilson groups them as psychological (e.g., personality, knowledge), demographic, interpersonal and role-related, environmental (time, place, culture), and source-related (accessibility, credibility, channel). Their importance is that they explain why people with similar needs behave very differently and why a need does not automatically lead to seeking — a key corrective to models that treat need as a direct cause of search.

What are the activating mechanisms Wilson added in his later model?

In the 1996/1999 revision Wilson incorporated three mechanisms from other disciplines to explain what turns a latent need into action. Stress/coping theory explains why some situations prompt seeking while others trigger avoidance; risk/reward theory explains how people weigh the anticipated benefits of seeking against its costs and effort; and self-efficacy explains how a person's belief in their ability to find and use information affects whether they attempt to. Ongoing search is continued, periodic searching that updates or extends an existing body of knowledge. Recognizing these modes captures the full range of information behaviour, from incidental encounters to systematic, sustained searching.
